At this time let me add some additional thoughts about the Kupferberg great adventure. We have visited Europe many times in the past,
Israel, five times for me and ten times for Joan and we have cruised the local area seas. This trip had a profound effect on my feelings about Jewishness and being Jewish. Some of the cities visited on this trip had a vital role during the second World War.

One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things. And see, we did. It became clear to me that Jews who travel will seek out the Jewish community; the Synagogue.
Though we saw magnificent palaces and learned of the Hapsburg dynasty, it was always the Synagogue that we sought.
Prague has many synagogues, but the New-Old Synagogue was the most important for me. It is the oldest synagogue in
Europe. Though the building is beautiful, it is the 80 thousand names of Prague Jews who perished in Terezin, written on every conceivable wall that grabbed and stunned me. The drawings of the children of Terazin are also there, and I saw drawings of black boots; stick figures with rifles; trains…..

We often comment that the High Holy Days are either ‘early’ or ‘late’ when actually they are always on time! But this year I confess that the Yamim Nora’im (“Days of Awe”) DO feel particularly early. Our preparations are well under way. But along with the work that I do preparing sermons and Torah and Haftarah readers, and the work that David Clayman and our Ritual Committee do by inviting many of you for bima honors, and the work that the Sisterhood does preparing our Yom Kippur break fast and food collection, and
