Ellen L. Stettner
Cantor
Ellen L. Stettner served as the Cantor of the historic Stephen Wise
Free Synagogue, New York City, NY, from 1981 through 2002, and was the
first person to have occupied that position. She also served Temple
Israel in Melbourne, Florida, as interim Spiritual Leader, before
accepting the position of Spiritual Leader of Temple Beth Shira in West
Boca Raton.
Cantor Stettner
taught on the faculty of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of
Religion, School of Sacred Music, and served on the Board of Directors
of the American Conference of Cantors, serving as Vice President from
2001 to 2004.
In addition to her
cantorial and concert work, Cantor Stettner has performed extensively
throughout the country with the Santa Fe Opera Company, the New York
Opera Ensemble, the New England Chamber Opera, and the Princeton Opera.
She won the prestigious National Arts and Letters Vocal Competition in
Carnegie Hall and, as a result, was the featured soloist in a
performance of Mozart arias with The American Symphony Orchestra. In
December, 2004, Cantor Stettner sang with the Army Ground Forces Band,
a concert that was taped and shown to US troops in Iraq on Christmas
Day. Cantor Stettner was also seen on worldwide television singing for
Nelson Mandela upon his release from prison in 1991. In addition, she
has been featured in documentaries by the BBC and French National
Television.
In May, 2006,
Cantor Stettner was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Hebrew
Union College for "25 years of devoted service to the Jewish
community." But most important of all, she is the very proud mother of Jesse, a recent graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder, and Rosie, a junior at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. In addition,Cantor Stettner is thrilled to
report her marriage to Ron Kane in July 2008.
Cantor Stettner dedicates all of her
service to Temple Beth Shira in loving memory of her precious mother, Dorothy
Warm Stettner.
