This past year brotherhood is proud of its accomplishments.   Our membership has grown. Our newest members are:  Ron Kane, Sigmund Haber, Martin Bromberg, and Alan Rosen.  Welcome aboard.

We became members of MRJ (which is the men of reform judaism).  We had a fun-filled Monday night football party at Duffy's.  We had a brotherhood shabbot on February 25th.  We assisted the Temple's main fund -raising event, which was the Elvis show.  We will be assisting the Temple, once again, for the yard sale on June 29th.  The paid up pizza lunch, where we had a great speaker representing Sen. Ted Deutsch.  We honored Dan Goldwasser at our first Man-of-the-Year award dinner, for all the hard work has has done for brotherhood and Temple.  We helped sisterhood at the onegs.  We are having a Theater party, Sunday, July 13th, at 2 PM.  The name of the show is "Zero Hour".  It is about the life of Zero Mostel.  Cost is $30. per person.  And we saved the best for last.  Our wonderful breakfast meetings, catered by our own Dan Goldwasser, featuring some great guest speakers.  All brotherhood members, and perspective members, are welcome to attend.  At our June 1st Breakfast we had Dr. Robert Watson as our guest speaker.  We were happy to invite the sisterhood members to attend.  We feel it is nice to be able to work with the sisterhood.

For now, this is the end of our story.  But more will come in the coming months.  So, men, if you are not a member this is a great time to join and help us grow.  Dues are $40.  Send your check to our treasurer. Alan Friedland, 8262 Summersong Terr, Boca Raton, Fl., 33496.

Dear TBS Family,

Our Erev Shabbat service on June 13 was the pinnacle of our synagogue year.  I hope you were able to be there --- because words cannot adequately describe the magnificence of that
evening.  It began with a processional in which our new Torah was escorted into our midst under a chuppah while the Shira Singers and the congregation sang Rom’mu Adonai Eloheinu.
We were ceremonially admitted into the Union for Reform Judaism when our beautiful certificate of membership was presented to us by Diane Michaels, President of the South Florida Federation.  Rabbi Linda Joseph, Director of the Southeast Region, and Cantor Ellen Stettner led our worship service.  Jordan Friedman, whose Bat Mitzvah took place the next day, had the honor of being the first to chant from the new Torah --- and she did herself and all of us very proud.  Thanks to several members of Sisterhood, our Oneg Shabbat was elegant --- with delicious pastries and champagne to mark the occasion.

A couple of people need to be singled out for their outstanding assistance as we prepared for URJ membership.  Rabbi Linda Joseph supported our efforts at every step.  Lois Rubin of Temple Kol Tikvah in Parkland is the Secretary of the South Florida Federation and Co-Chair of the New Congregations/Small Congregations Committee.  Lois was our mentor as we went through the membership application process.  Other Southeast Region representatives who honored us with their presence included Dr. Alan Herzlin, our assigned mentor since our  admission to the Union in December; Jay Gellman, Camp Coleman Committee Chair; David Beale, President of the Palm Beach Association of Reform Temples.  There are many others who should be thanked and recognized --- but the list is much too long to detail here. Please know that your efforts and good wishes are gratefully appreciated.

Our new Torah came to us through the URJ’s Torah Loan Program.  But special recognition and thanks must go to Temple Beth El of Anniston, Alabama.  That historic congregation with roots going back to the late 1800’s gave us that gorgeous Torah to protect, cherish and study.

If you go to our website, templebethshira.org, and click on Galleries, you will be able to see pictures of our magic evening as recorded by our webmaster Marc Sitkin.

One more Item of congregation business.  On June 11th your Board of Directors reorganized for the fiscal year beginning on July 1st.  Officers are:  Jay Padgug, President; Rick Alovis, Vice-President; Marc Shapiro, Secretary; and Jan Wexler, Treasurer.
Other Board members are:  Jerry Krassenstein, Dan Goldwasser,
David Clayman, Marc Sitkin, Joel Tepper, Irwin Moss (Brotherhood President), and Harriet Yarmis (Sisterhood President).

I hope you are all enjoying your summer, and I look forward to seeing you at our worship services.

L’Shalom,

Jay Padgug
President

    INFLATION HITS SISTERHOOD

As hard as we tried,  and with regret we find that we cannot maintain the current cost of having a special Oneg Shabbat.  As of July 1,2008 the cost of most  special occasion Onegs  (except  Bar and Bat  Mitzvah) will be $175.00. The cost of sponsoring a Bar or Bat Mitzvah Oneg will be $225.00.

Anyone may sponsor an Oneg, which Sisterhood will host. The special Onegs will be expanded to include  things such as Fruit Platters, flowers, balloons, special cakes, etc. Every effort will be made to honor any special requests you may have.

and what special occasion you are celebrating also any special requests.  She will take care of everything.   If you have any questions contact Marcia.
